Rice Bug

The rice bug  (Leptocorisa acuta) significantly threatens rice cultivation, affecting the yield’s quality and quantity. PRIMA Agro Tech adopts a biocontrol strategy employing microorganisms like Metarhizium anisopliale and Beauveria bassiana. This approach focuses on controlling rice bug infestations in an environmentally sustainable manner, thereby safeguarding rice crops from the damaging effects of these pests.

About Pest

Rice bugs, identified by their green colour and brownish wings, emit a foul odour and are known for their detrimental impact on rice plants. The most notable damage occurs during the grain-filling stage, where these pests feed on the rice grains, leading to empty husks.

The grains often exhibit black dots, which are puncture marks left by the rice bugs as they consume the contents of the grains. This damage affects the appearance of rice grains and significantly reduces their nutritional and economic value.

Microbial Consortium

PRIMA Agro Tech employs a combination of biocontrol microorganisms to manage rice bug infestations effectively:

Metarhizium anisopliae isolate D1: This entomopathogenic fungus targets rice bugs by adhering to their exoskeleton. Once attached, it penetrates the insect’s body, spreading internally. Metarhizium anisopliale disrupts the rice bug’s vital functions by producing toxins and enzymes that deteriorate its internal organs, ultimately leading to the pest’s death. This fungus is particularly effective due to its ability to target a broad range of insect pests and its persistence in the soil, providing long-term protection.

Beauveria bassiana isolate B33: Acting as a natural insecticide, Beauveria bassiana works by attaching to the rice bug’s cuticle. The fungus then breaches the exoskeleton and grows inside the insect’s body. As it proliferates, Beauveria bassiana consumes the rice bug’s nutrients and releases toxins, causing the insect to weaken and die. This isolate is especially useful for its virulent properties and capability to control various stages of the rice bug, from larvae to adults.

Through these biocontrol agents, PRIMA Agro Tech’s method offers a comprehensive and sustainable solution to reduce rice bug populations, targeting existing pests and creating an environment less conducive to their reproduction, thereby ensuring the protection and health of rice crops.
