Mealybug

Mealybugs (Pseudococcidae) are a significant agricultural pest, causing extensive damage to many crops. PRIMA Agro Tech adopts a strategic biocontrol approach using microorganisms such as Verticillium lecanii, Isaria fumosorosea, and their specific isolates. This method effectively combats mealybug infestations while minimising environmental impact, aligning with sustainable agricultural practices and providing a comprehensive solution to protect crops from these damaging pests.

About Pest

Mealybugs are typically found beneath leaves, distinguishable by their white colour and the waxy coating produced by their bodies. This wax layer serves a dual purpose: it protects the mealybugs from pesticide exposure and parasitoid attacks. Additionally, mealybugs secrete substances that encourage the growth of sooty moulds.

The damage they cause is evident in the appearance of spots on stems, shoots, and leaves, which are remnants of insect punctures. In severe cases, the plants can lose chlorophyll and fluids, leading to desiccation and death. The control of mealybugs is crucial to prevent these significant losses and maintain crop health.

Microbial Consortium

PRIMA Agro Tech offers a comprehensive and environmentally sustainable approach to managing mealybug populations through the combined use of these biocontrol agents. These agents target and eliminate the existing pests and help create an environment less conducive to their reproduction, ensuring the long-term health and productivity of crops affected by mealybugs.

Verticillium lecanii strain SZWL7: This fungus is a natural enemy of mealybugs. It infects the pests by penetrating their waxy coating and colonising their bodies. Inside the mealybug, Verticillium lecanii proliferates and causes the insect’s death by disrupting its internal functions. Its ability to overcome the protective wax layer makes it particularly effective against mealybugs.

Verticillium lecanii isolate ID05-F0117: This specific isolate of Verticillium lecanii works similarly to strain SZWL7, targeting mealybugs by infecting them and disrupting their vital functions. The effectiveness of this isolate lies in its adaptability and potency against a range of mealybug species.

Isaria fumosorosea strain Isfm-CPF: This entomopathogenic fungus targets mealybugs by attaching to their bodies and penetrating the exoskeleton. It then grows inside the mealybug, consuming nutrients and releasing toxins that weaken and eventually kill the host. Isaria fumosorosea effectively controls various life stages of mealybugs, from nymphs to adults.

Beauveria bassiana isolate B33: As a natural insecticide, Beauveria bassiana B33 infects mealybugs by attaching to their cuticle and growing inside their body. The fungus consumes the mealybug’s internal nutrients and releases toxins, leading to the insect’s demise. This isolate is known for its virulent properties and ability to effectively control mealybugs.
