Fruit Fly

The fruit fly, Bactrocera dorsalis, is a major agricultural pest known for causing significant damage to diverse fruit crops. PRIMA Agro Tech has developed a biocontrol strategy using Cordyceps fumosorosea and Metarhizium robertsii. This approach targets the fruit fly in a sustainable and environmentally friendly way, reducing the need for chemical pesticides and helping to maintain the health and productivity of fruit-bearing plants.

About Pest

The fruit fly, which resembles a small bee, inflicts damage on fruit by injecting eggs into it. As the larvae hatch, they consume the fruit’s flesh. This pest is particularly prolific during the rainy season, leading to increased infestation rates. The affected fruit typically becomes soft and turns brownish, eventually rotting. Large larvae resembling maggots can be found inside the infested fruit, indicating a severe infestation. This reduces the aesthetic and commercial value of the fruit and can lead to significant yield losses.

Microbial Consortium

PRIMA Agro Tech employs two specific biocontrol microorganisms to manage fruit fly infestations effectively:

Cordyceps fumosorosea isolate B3: This entomopathogenic fungus is effective against the fruit fly. It infects the flies by attaching to their bodies and penetrating their exoskeleton. Cordyceps fumosorosea proliferates and disrupts vital functions inside the host, leading to the pest’s death. This isolate is particularly beneficial for its adaptability to various environmental conditions and its effectiveness in targeting Fruit Flies.

Metarhizium robertsii strain 6EIKEN: As a natural insecticide, this fungus targets fruit flies by adhering to their exoskeleton and penetrating it. Once inside the fly’s body, Metarhizium robertsii grows and consumes internal nutrients, releasing toxins that weaken and eventually kill the host. This strain effectively controls various life stages of the fruit fly, from larvae to adults.

By combining these biocontrol agents, PRIMA Agro Tech offers a comprehensive and sustainable solution to the fruit fly problem. This approach eliminates pests and creates an environment less conducive to future infestations, ensuring long-term protection and health for fruit crops.
