Black Cutworm

The black cutworm is a significant pest in agriculture, known for its destructive impact on young plants. PRIMA Agro Tech has implemented a biocontrol strategy utilising Bacillus thuringiensis and Serratia marcescens. This approach aims to control black cutworm infestations in a sustainable and environmentally responsible manner, reducing reliance on chemical pesticides and preserving the health and productivity of various crops.

About Pest

The black cutworm is characterised by its grey-brown colour and habit of hiding in the ground. It is predominantly active at night, attacking young plants by biting at the base of the stem or leaf. This activity causes the plant to become floppy and wilted, often resulting in the plant being cut off at the base of the stem.

The cut marks made by this pest are typically visible above the ground surface, indicating where the plant has been severed. This damage can lead to significant losses in young crops, directly affecting the plant’s ability to grow and develop.

Microbial Consortium

PRIMA Agro Tech employs two specific biocontrol microorganisms to manage black cutworm infestations effectively:

Bacillus thuringiensis strain 4042: This bacterium is renowned for its insecticidal properties, particularly effective against caterpillars like the black cutworm. It produces toxins that disrupt their digestive systems when ingested by the larvae, leading to their death. Bacillus thuringiensis strain 4042 targets the cutworms, ensuring it is safe for beneficial insects and the larger environment.

Serratia marcescens strain NPKC3_2_21: Besides its insecticidal capabilities, this bacterium promotes plant growth. It combats the black cutworm by producing chitinase enzymes and other metabolites that degrade its exoskeleton, weakening and eventually killing it. This strain not only helps control the pest population but also enhances the overall resilience of the plants, making them more resistant to pest infestations.

By using these biocontrol agents, PRIMA Agro Tech offers a comprehensive and sustainable approach to reducing black cutworm populations, effectively controlling the pest while supporting the overall health and productivity of the affected crops.
