Scale Insect

Scale insects (Coccidae) are particularly detrimental to many crops, causing considerable damage and significant yield losses in agriculture. PRIMA Agro Tech confronts this challenge with targeted biocontrol agents, specifically employing Verticillium lecanii and Beauveria bassiana. This strategic approach not only effectively combats scale insect infestations but also upholds sustainable agricultural practices, providing a viable solution to safeguard crops from the harmful effects of these pests.

About Pest

Scale insects are known for forming a protective layer under which their larvae settle and feed. These pests are polyphagous, meaning they can feed on various plants, and tend to live in groups, often found on the undersides of leaves. As they feed, they sap essential fluids from the plants, causing the leaves to turn yellow and eventually dry up.

The affected parts of the plant, including leaves and sometimes even fruit, may fall off, and chlorotic spots are visible on the surfaces where they feed. This damage affects the plant’s health and growth and can lead to significant crop losses.

Microbial Consortium

PRIMA Agro Tech employs two specific biocontrol microorganisms to combat scale insect infestations, each with its unique mechanism of action:

Verticillium lecanii isolate ID05-F0117: This fungus is a natural enemy of scale insects. It works by attaching to the insect’s body and penetrating its exoskeleton. Once inside, it proliferates, feeding on the insect’s internal structures and eventually leading to death. Verticillium lecanii is particularly effective because it can thrive in the same environmental conditions as scale insects, ensuring its efficacy in various climates and settings.

Beauveria bassiana isolate B33: Similarly to its action against other pests, Beauveria bassiana functions as a natural insecticide against scale insects. It attaches to the insect’s exoskeleton and then penetrates it, growing inside its body. As the fungus expands, it consumes the nutrients of the scale insect and releases toxins, weakening and eventually killing the host. Beauveria bassiana’s ability to control different stages of the scale insect, from larvae to adults, makes it an invaluable tool in pest management.

PRIMA Agro Tech offers a comprehensive and sustainable solution to managing scale insect populations by utilising these microorganisms. These biocontrol agents eliminate the existing pests and help prevent future infestations, thereby protecting crops and supporting sustainable agriculture.
