Leaf Roller

The leaf roller (Lamprosema indicata) presents a notable challenge in agriculture, particularly impacting bean plants that are 3-4 weeks old. PRIMA Agro Tech’s approach to managing this pest involves biocontrol agents like Bacillus thuringiensis and Serratia marcescens. This strategy aims to control leaf roller infestations effectively through sustainable means, minimising chemical pesticides and preserving the health of crops and the surrounding ecosystem.

About Pest

Leaf rollers target young bean plants, causing significant damage. They are known for their behaviour of rolling the leaves of the plant, using them as a hiding place and then consuming the leaf from the inside, leaving only the skeletal structure. This behaviour is not only destructive to the individual leaves but can also severely impact the overall health and productivity of the plant.

The presence of leaf rollers is easily identifiable by the rolled leaves, which may also contain the worms, their faeces, or cocoons. The damage caused by these pests can lead to reduced photosynthesis, stunted growth, and, in severe cases, the death of the plant.

Microbial Consortium

PRIMA Agro Tech utilises a combination of biocontrol microorganisms to manage leaf roller infestations effectively:

Bacillus thuringiensis strain 4042: This bacterium is a well-known biocontrol agent with specific insecticidal properties. It produces toxic proteins in certain insects, including the leaf roller. When ingested by the larvae, these proteins bind to the gut lining, causing cell lysis and subsequent death of the larvae. The specificity of Bacillus thuringiensis ensures it targets only harmful pests, making it safe for beneficial insects and the larger environment.

Serratia marcescens strain NPKC3_2_21: Besides its insecticidal properties, this bacterium promotes plant growth. It works against the leaf roller by producing enzymes and metabolites that break down the insect’s exoskeleton, leading to its death. This strain not only helps control the pest population but also enhances the overall resilience of the plants, making them less susceptible to future infestations.

Through the combined use of these biocontrol agents, PRIMA Agro Tech provides an effective, comprehensive, and environmentally sustainable solution to the problem of leaf roller infestations, ensuring the protection and vitality of bean crops.
