Leaf Folder

The leaf folder is a significant pest in agriculture, affecting crops by causing extensive leaf damage. PRIMA Agro Tech has developed a biocontrol approach to manage this pest, utilising Bacillus thuringiensis and Serratia marcescens. This method provides a sustainable and environmentally friendly solution, effectively targeting the leaf folder larvae and minimising the impact on non-target species and the broader ecosystem.

About Pest

The primary cause of damage from the leaf folder is the moth’s larva, Cnaphalocrosis medinalis. These larvae feed on the green tissue of leaves from the inside of their rolled structure, leaving behind white, damaged tissue. This feeding behaviour results in a distinct appearance on the leaves —  white or silvery patches that resemble silverleaf attack symptoms.

The leaves are typically rolled vertically, and the damage is characterised by transparent white stripe spots that align with the veins of the leaves. This damage not only reduces the aesthetic value of the plants but, more importantly, impacts photosynthesis and overall plant health, potentially leading to reduced crop yields.

Microbial Consortium

PRIMA Agro Tech employs two specific biocontrol microorganisms to manage leaf folder infestations effectively:

Bacillus thuringiensis strain 4042: This bacterium is known for its targeted insecticidal properties. When ingested by the leaf folder larvae, it produces toxins that bind to receptors in their gut lining. This interaction causes cell lysis and subsequent death of the larvae. Bacillus thuringiensis strain 4042 is particularly effective due to its specificity, targeting harmful pests while being safe for beneficial insects, animals, and humans.

Serratia marcescens strain NPKC3_2_21: Besides its insecticidal properties, this bacterium promotes plant growth. It combats leaf folder larvae by producing chitinase enzymes that degrade their exoskeleton, ultimately leading to their death. Additionally, this strain enhances plant resilience, making it more difficult for the leaf folder to cause significant damage.

By using these biocontrol agents, PRIMA Agro Tech offers a comprehensive and sustainable approach to reducing leaf folder populations, effectively controlling the pest while supporting the overall health and productivity of the affected crops.
