Armyworm

The armyworm, specifically Spodoptera litura, is a major agricultural pest known for its polyphagous nature and ability to cause large-scale damage to various crops. PRIMA Agro Tech has implemented a biocontrol strategy utilising Bacillus thuringiensis and Serratia marcescens. This approach aims to manage armyworm infestations effectively in a sustainable manner, reducing the need for chemical pesticides and thereby preserving the health and productivity of the affected crops.

About Pest

Spodoptera litura, as a polyphagous pest, feeds on a wide range of plants. These nocturnal creatures are most active and feed at night, challenging their control. Early intervention is critical to prevent rapid population growth, especially when the worms are young. The damage caused by armyworms is evident from the holes in the leaves and fruits, indicating their feeding activity.

Additionally, the presence of the worm’s faeces, which appear as small, dark green circles, can be found on and around the affected plants. This level of infestation not only affects the plant’s growth and yield but can also lead to significant economic losses for farmers.

Microbial Consortium

PRIMA Agro Tech employs two specific biocontrol microorganisms to manage armyworm infestations effectively:

Bacillus thuringiensis strain 4042: This bacterium is known for its insecticidal properties that are particularly effective against caterpillar pests like the armyworm. It produces toxins that disrupt their digestive systems and cause death when the larvae ingest. The specificity of Bacillus thuringiensis ensures that it targets harmful pests while being safe for beneficial insects and the environment.

Serratia marcescens strain NPKC3_2_21: Besides its insecticidal capabilities, this bacterium promotes plant growth. It combats the armyworm by producing enzymes and metabolites that degrade and weaken the pest’s exoskeleton, leading to its death. This strain not only helps control the pest population but also enhances the overall health and resilience of the plants.

By integrating these biocontrol agents, PRIMA Agro Tech provides a comprehensive and sustainable approach to reducing armyworm populations, effectively controlling the pest and supporting the overall health and productivity of the affected crops.
